Applying to college in the new millennium is incredibly difficult for anyone. For high school students under the poverty line, it is nearly impossible. Fewer than 30% of America’s poorest students enroll in a four-year college. This is a cycle: Impoverished students’ parents are also less likely to have attended college. There is no role model, no guideline, and no expectation. In short, these students lack the tools, skills and support necessary to complete this process. That’s where Essay Busters comes in.
Essay Busters is one of the few non-profit organizations in the country focused on that academically mid-level student. You know—the ones like you and me. The difference? These disadvantaged, low-income students are worrying about getting fed or having a safe place to sleep and their high school guidance counselors are overwhelmed and underfunded.
Essay Busters makes it possible for these students to get the support they need, to complete their college applications and essays. And we have a 95% success rate of our students getting accepted to colleges and receiving significant financial aid—in large part because of the stories and the applications their Essay Busters mentors help them create.
But Essay Busters needs your support. In order to continue our work throughout New York City, the surrounding areas, and eventually the nation, we need your help. Currently, we are in four schools, four more are on our waiting list and every day we receive calls asking us to bring our program to even more schools and programs—as far away as California.
With your help, we can double our impact. Help us to reach more than 400 new students by 2015.
Participate in #GivingTuesday and help us reach our $15,000 goal!!!
